My Aztek was doing the same thing.  Groaning during parking type turns.  Thanks to the information provided above I was able to show the dealer the service bulletin number.  They added fluid and now I do not hear any more groaning.  I was told to keep a close eye on it.  Thanks!

mumaluke,

Oil change places could probably do it, but make sure that they use the correct fluid.  You might have to bring it with you.  They most likely will not have it and the use of the wrong fluid will damage the rear drive module.  Do not under any circumstances use any other type of fluid even if they say it is the same thing or better.

mumaluke,

You might also want to give them a copy of the procedure that I posted on page two of this thread.  Also note the last couple of steps in that procedure, they probably will not do that, you will have to do that yourself (driving in tight circles and then bring it back to them to bring the level up to the required spec.

A few months ago, the problem came back.  I took it in again for warranty repair; they kept it for a whole day, gave me a loaner (through a rental company that they paid for).  Problem was solved up until now.  It's starting to do it again and now that I'm off warranty due to time, not mileage (26,000) on my 2003, I'm considering selling/trading it in and slipping into a GTO or Grand Prix GT (if I go the sedan route).  Still contemplating this decision.

I thought about buying an extended warranty, but I don't want to shell out about $2k just so I can keep taking it in over and over for the same thing that shouldn't break, even though that's what the warranty is for.

Don't get me wrong, I love this vehicle and think it's totally awesome and I'd miss it and it's versatility/utility if I do get something else, but I don't have the time to keep having it in the shop.

Dropped mine off last night - it was groaning very badly over the weekend.

Dealer called today and said they were not able to find the noise and that they suspected it was tire noise due to the aggressive tread of the tires!

I guess we'll see when I pick it up.  It just turned 39k miles, but I believe it's still under 3 years from the service date.  I think the noise has been there for a while, but for some reason this weekend it was really bad.

I'm not about to pay $3000+ for a repair!  I'm beginning to think I should have stayed with Japanese cars!

Well, picked it up today, and I don't hear the groaning noise any more.  I'm wondering if it will come back.  Might have something to do with the colder weather up in Michigan, or maybe it was the 600 mile trip up there????

Well I got a 2001 Aztek AWD Versatrak used....A week ago and when I drove it off the lot it was makes a groan high pitched sound....I brought it to a local garage and they told me my Rear Differential was leaking really bad and could cost 2500 dollars to fix!!...But the dealership I bought it from is covering it....I'm upset because how can you even sell a car that has a problem like that!...I love the Aztek, I've always wanted one....But that's a major problem!

Well, the sound is back.  Seems to only pop up after the Aztek is warmed up.  Guess I will have to get it nice and warmed up before I take it back to the dealer.  Maybe I'll drive it into the service bay and make a sharp turn, nice and slow and then ask them if they hear the noise!

Might have to check with my auto parts supplier and see if he can get me a deal on the rear diff oil like somebody mentioned in the other thread.

qstick77... any updates on your repairs?  What did they say it was?  How did they fix it?  How much did it cost?

Actually they really didn't...They just repeatedly apologized and thanked me for having so much patience....They are full of it!! Like Yes, I got the Aztek now it's fixed...But my whole experience with buying it off of them as well as there customer service is bottom lined horrible!! I hope I never see or deal with them again....But I have it back and crossing my fingers nothing else goes wrong!

Funny about my seeing this topic today of all days...I JUST took my Aztek into the dealership this morning to have a "mysterious groan" in the rear end checked out...turns out it was my Versatrak too.  I am doing some mods to this car, so I wanted to make sure I had it completely checked out before I did anything that 'might' void out certain parts of the warranty.  So far so good...I seem to have an otherwise completely sound Aztek and haven't had any "major" problems with it since buying it a year ago.
