Can other oils be used instead of the over priced Versatrak fluid/oil? I've seen other people on the internet talk about using a 75w-90 gear oil and something called Royal Purple Synchromax. Will these work?

Versatrak fluid is the only suggested fluid for this  fluid driven system.  Other stuff may work,,,for a while anyway, but whi knows what will happen long term.   If you do a search at least one of the posts here has the part number for it. You could check the price at gmpartsdirect.com  or another gmparts place online to see if discount price may make it easier.

Versatrak fluid is GM Part # 12378514, which I believe is a half-liter bottle.

My 2005 aztek is out of warranty, so i purchased the Royal Ppurple Synchromax. It's $13..00 a pint (2), but did not work.I changed the fluid twice as recomended.I just drained the Synchromax and added the Versatrak fluid.Works great.I found the Veratrak fluid on e-bay motors for $75.00 (4 Pints). You may want to use the Sychromax as a flushing agent to save money, but unfortunatley Versatrak fliud is what is needed to fix ths moaning sound.(Liquid Gold).
