Cold Air Intake Question
«
on:
January 31, 2010, 10:01:58 pm »
Do I need to make a cold air intake if I want one for an Aztek, or will any one work thats made for an SFI 3400? Could I get one made for a Grand Am or Rendezvous (if that exists)? What about the universal ones, are those any good?
Thanks,
Sam

Late model vehicles, Aztek included, have a pretty efficient cold air intake already. If you see a kit that has the filter element in plain view in the engine compartment it's a step backwards, drawing hot air. A K&N filter element might help a little, 2-3 HP, nothing you'd notice. The engineers need the engine to get the cool air in a non restricted manner, keeping in mind noise and space requirements. They usually do a pretty good job as messy as it looks because of the large size of the ducting. The only thing better would be like the Vettes with the intake duct built into the hood. (The Tek's is in the fender well, a nice cool, calm area)
Besides, most changes you make are undone by the computer anyway unless you remap the fuel curves.

I added a K&N filter, replacing the stock. It is worth it if you are looking for better gas mileage. I picked up a few 10ths of a mpg. When you add it all up, I think it's worth it. But I do agree with T@z stay stock.

I did the K&N on my Tek too. overall, a minimal power improvement, a bit throatier sound (coupled with the dual exhaust) and money savings over the life of the filter since it is washable.
Now, I did just add a Banks CAI on my Sierra. It is a much larger filter, much bigger openings, bigger ductwork, and straight from the filter box into the engine. The OEM intake had large balloon like add ons- they were on to help quiet the noise of the incoming air. Now when I mash the gas pedal, you hear the hiss of flowing air and feel quicker pedal response.
