Hello.  Has anyone experienced a problem with the odometer/trip odometer and driver info. center?  My odometer and trip indicate 'Error' and show no mileage.  Also related seem to be dashes (---) for any mileage-related information in the driver info. center.  Just curious if anyone else has run into this problem.  Mine is a 2002 Aztek, fwd.

'02 Aztek.  White with red interior accents.  1SB (DIC, Sunroof, etc).  All options except leather and AWD.  Placed Versatrak emblem in correct place on back glass 'cause the right side seemed lonely without anything Smiley

I've never heard of that one but I would get that checked out ASAP.  Otherwise you run the risk of having innacurate mileage which gets into a problem when you trade the vehicle in.  I have no idea what would cause that either besides a bad dash panel (I believe that is where the odometer readings are kept.)

Yeah,,

you need to visit your dealer and have the Tech-2 plugged in to isolate that problem,,,maybe, just maybe they can reset it and HOPEFULY bring back your actual mileage.

The odometer I believe receives its information via the vehicle's speed sensor (located on the transaxle) or the wheel speed sensors located in the wheel/hub bearings.  I believe that information also routes to one of the main modules (Powertrain Contol Module or Body Control Module) and then to the cluster.  I believe that a wiring, sensor, module communication issue or even a bad cluster could result in this.  As ANDE stated, the dealership's TECH2 will be able to determine the cause.  If it is a wiring or sensor related issue, I believe the mileage should be restored.  If it is the module or the cluster, it is difficult to say if the original mileage will remain in the memory and be transferred to any new parts installed (really depends on what failed).

Ok,  I found this in the service manual for you.

"The odometer will display ERROR if an internal Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) memory malfunction is detected or if there is a class 2 communication fault."

I looked over the diagnostice trouble trees and it appears that they do connect a TECH 2 to search for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC), observe the parameters of the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS - not to be confused with the Wheel/Hub Speed Sensors, they are two diffferent items) and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).  They observe their operation and look for codes.  If they find anything operating outside the normal parameters, they go to that item and test it.  If they find a fault they repair it (in the case of wiring) or replace it in the case of the IPC.

This just happened to me today.  The odometer/trip odometer in my beloved baby was out today.  The info center worked just fine though.  It seems strange that 4 months ago is the first reported case of this though.  I see the potential problem can be fixed with another expensive dealer visit.  oh boy!  I sure am loving this purchase... only 1 more year to payoff the loan!

That was on of my symptoms when I had to have the BCM replaced ON MY 01 GT.  Also, the DIC would occassionally flash "SECURITY."

I had the same problem on my '02 Aztek.  The odometer read error and none of the odometer based information on the driver information system was working either. I took it in to the dealer (still under warranty at the time, thank God!) and the gauge cluster had to be replaced.  They told me that the inside of the old one was fried.  They could not even get an odometer reading out of it, so they went off the oil change sticker on my windshield and my memory to set the new odometer!  One week later, I finally had a new cluster and a few less miles than I originally had!

Right now my 2002 has NOTHING BUT the odometer. Tach, speedo, fuel, and temp gauges stopped working when I changed car batteries. Oddly, everything worked through several dischargings/ jump startings of the old battery.

It's at the dealer now. Hopefully, they'll have it done for me by week's end.
