Hi all,

I have a 2005 AWD w/o towing package and have read the posts on this forum and the owners manual.  My question concerns the 2005 owners manual.  In the early part of the towing section it recommends towing in 3rd gear which is consistent with the wisom on this forum.  In the latter part of the towing section under the heading of "driving on grades" it reverses this recommendation for towing more than 1000lbs and says that using automatic OD will reduce heat build up.  I did some reasearch and the 2004 owners manual recommends using 3rd gear (the exact opposite) in the same section.

This seems to make no sense.  The only situation I can think of where OD might be a benefit would be going down a slight downgrade where engine braking is not required and it is steep enough to overcome wind resistance so that OD will stay engaged.  By the way I am going to tow a 5x8 u-haul enclosed tralier which will likely weigh about 1600lb total from PA to GA.

Anyone have any insight on this apparent inconsistency?

Thanks,
Russ

Welcome DrRuss! Yikes... I have a 2005, but no tow package (or aftermarket setup). Sorry, but I can't answer to that... but... I do want to tell you to enjoy the forum and post often - glad to have you aboard. Other members will reply with some help.

I do know the manual has a few other issues/typos, etc. It could be a goof, indeed. Good eye - great topic.

I didn't have the tow package in my old 2003 Tek, but I did add a tranny cooler and air shocks in the back.  I towed a pop up camper that weighed in right at about 3500 pounds- the max limit of the Tek.  As long as I was on any road condition other than one being very flat, I kept it in 3rd to avoid going into OD.  The constant shifting and downshifting of the trans while not locked into 3rd gear as top gear will cause the trans to get high in temp.  Now on the flip side, if you keep the Tek in 3rd and drove faster than say 65-70 mph, the engine could possibly overheat since the engine is working harder and faster than the trans will allow it to.
My recommendation- keep it in 3rd and keep under 70mph

Now I have a 08 GMC Sierra and tow a 30 foot travel trailer with a empty weight of 7000 pounds.  The truck has a "tow mode" that changes shift patterns to reduce heat and wear and tear on the trans.

Welcome to the site and safe trailering.
